Cooper Jumonville, a native New Orleanian, first discovered the beauty of teaching ESL while living in Madrid, Spain. Looking for a few extra pesetas to enjoy la marcha madrileña, Cooper began giving small and private ESL classes to adults. He later returned to Missouri, where he continued teaching foreign languages (albeit this time the language was Spanish and his students were children). He later received his BA in Spanish and International Studies from Saint Louis University in 2001. After completing his Masters in Hispanic Literatures at the University of Texas at Austin in 2005 – where he also worked as an instructor teaching Spanish classes to UT undergrads as well as medical Spanish classes to local health care workers – he moved to southwest France for one year to teach English at the collegiate level. |

Marlene Friis is originally from Denmark but grew up in the Middle East and Austria. While her Arabic is terrible, she does play backgammon very well. Her French at school was also very poor, but she improved a lot when she worked at the Pan-African Film Festival in Burkino Faso. Before entering the world of teaching, she worked in film distribution and exhibition in London, Ouagadougou, and San Francisco. She holds an M.A. in TESOL (ESL) from Hunter College (City University of New York) and an M.A. in Image Studies from the University of Kent at Canterbury. She loves to teach academic skills that will help international students succeed in their studies and has taught ESL at the university level since 1998. She thinks that the national and state parks in the United States are some of the most beautiful places in the world and recommends that you visit them, too! |
